Patrick Mahomes responds to Trump after viral video – and says it “explains a lot” about misogyny in the US
Patrick Mahomes surprised viewers by posting a video directly responding to the moment Donald Trump called a female reporter “shut up, piggy”.
Mahomes said he wanted to show viewers a viral clip from MSNBC where Trump was confronted with a series of comments that had called women “fat pigs, dogs, sluts” or criticized their appearance, even making comments that were sexually offensive.
“We can’t just treat this as normal,” Mahomes said. “These comments are not just insulting, they reflect a way of seeing women as objects to be judged, degraded, and discarded.”
He added that the cheering reactions from some crowds at Trump rallies “explain why misogyny is so strong”.
“Donald isn’t just saying horrible things. He’s saying how he really sees women,” Mahomes said. “And that’s alarming.”
Mahomes emphasized that the video of Trump saying he “wouldn’t pick her first” was essentially an admission of racist thinking, and that the normalization of this type of speech is having an impact on society, especially on younger generations.
“I play in the NFL every week and I see it very clearly: young people look to celebrities as role models,” he said. “If we encourage or tolerate the degrading of women, we’re sowing a very toxic seed.”
Mahomes also shared that many NFL players have spoken to him privately about the video and agree that male role models need to be held more accountable.
“I’m not talking about this because of politics,” Mahomes insisted. “I’m talking about this because we’re demanding respect from women, while remaining silent when powerful people abuse them.”
In closing, Mahomes reminded that American football has a history of sexism, and that male athletes must do their part to change that.
“In the NFL, we learned that you respect everyone in the locker room – regardless of gender. No one has the right to degrade women. Not me, not any player, and certainly not a former president.”
